Newcastle will be dangerously short if they do not replacChr

Newcastle Unitedwill be left dangerously short if they do not replaceChris Woodthis window and are actively pursuing targets, but there are no guarantees they will bring in a replacement, admits Eddie Howe.

The 31-year-old striker is undergoing a medical at Nottingham Forest today ahead of completing a loan move, which contains an obligation to buy if certain conditions are met.

Initially, Howe was keen to keep hold of Wood this month but, once Newcastle received what the club considered to be an impressive offer, and with the New Zealand international making clear his desire to move, the head coach ratified the deal.

Hopefully, were planning to replace him, Howe said at his pre-Crystal Palacepress conference this morning. Certainly, from my side there was no thought of letting a player go and not replacing. I think that would leave us dangerously short of players. But theres no guarantees. Thats the position were in.

Newcastle held transfer discussions on Wednesday and have stepped up their pursuit of targets they had already identified for the summer. Howe still wants a midfielder, but now a versatile attacking player has also become a priority.

His preference is that he wants players to play now, ideally with top-level European experience or who have played in thePremier Leaguebefore.

We would have targets that we would pursue, for sure, Howe said, while insisting that Newcastle are likely to try and recruit an attacking player in a different mould to Wood.

I think its important not just to have one. We do have a pool of players that we like. Lets see how we go.

Howe revealed that Wood has been offered a contract at Forest that is 12 months longer than he had remaining at Newcastle, which would take him to 2025.

A few days ago, Howe was not even considering losing Wood, who has made 18 Premier League appearances this season, albeit only four as a starter, but that the player was receptive to the Forest offer.

I think Chris is having a medical withNottingham Forest, probably as we speak. Thats the situation, Howe said.

Hes been a huge player for us, outstanding in every way. When we signed him, we were in a very difficult league position. He played a huge part on the pitch to help transform the team.

Hes been excellent, both on and off the pitch, in terms of his leadership and positivity even when hes not played. You cant underestimate the role hes played. It was a difficult decision, because you have to take into account the player and his wishes. But also, I think its a very good deal financially for the football club.

We were in a very difficult position because the player wanted to go.
