Erik ten Hag has been told his decision to play Luke Shaw at centre-back in recent weeks ahead of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof has sent a message to all parties, and that the England star is now a competitor for the position.

Meanwhile, Alejandro Garnacho has been backed to help the form of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial going forward. The Argentine bagged his fifth assist of the campaign when he set up Rashfords winner in Saturdays 2-1 derby win over Manchester City.

At the other end of the pitch,Shawwas selected to play in the middle of defence for a fourth time this season with natural centre-backs Maguire and Lindelof benched. Ten Hag explained that Shaw started ahead of Lisandro Martinez due to the limited amount of game time the World Cup winner had experienced since his Qatar success.

Shaw is now definitely an option as a left centre half. It looks like Raphael Varane is the go-to guy in the defence and then its up for grabs to take the position next to him. Shaw has done well and is experienced which is really important in that position.

Silvestre also praisedGarnachofor his breakthrough from the youth ranks and forecasts a promising future for the 18-year-old. He added: Garnacho will get a lot of opportunities but you have to be cautious with young players.

He has done well and he has already set the bar very high. I definitely think that he can continue in the future and he is also important in terms of providing assists for Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.
